Pain is the most common reason why people seek acupuncture treatments. There are many different kinds of pain - from tension headaches to migraines, carpal tunnel, knee pain, tennis elbow, low back pain, neck & shoulder tightness, etc. Causes of the pain can be just as various: injury, overuse, accident, internal issues, etc. The good news is acupuncture can help with all of the above.
However, let's be realistic. Please don't expect that one treatment will cure chronic pain of 20 years. It is possible, but very unlikely. The longer you suffered from the condition, the more difficult it is to cure. Sometimes, all we can do is manage your pain instead of getting rid of it.
Healthy diet and regular exercises are important for your general health, but for your pain, too. There are 2 types of patients I've seen. One is someone who hates exercising or any kind of movement. They're the people who drive to the mailbox which is just a few feet away. Another type is someone who won't stop exercising even when they're hurt. Please do not over-exercise if you're hurting. If you have more pain after exercising, please do not engage in that particular exercise. Find something that makes you feel good afterwards! "No pain, no gain" does not apply here. It slows your healing.
Even for the pain, I usually ask my patients if they would be interested in taking Chinese herbal formula. Those who take the herbs as prescribed get better more quickly than those who refuse to take them.
